The Book of Life and the Other Records
I have begun to explore what the Old and New Testaments have to say about the records that are kept in Heaven. It has always been my assumption that those who are born again have their names recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life and that records of our good works are kept in other books. I’m researching this subject because I think that it might impact the way that we live here and now on Earth if we know more about what will be in the hereafter.
Exodus 32:31-34
“So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. But now, please forgive their sin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.”
The Lord replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin.”
Psalm 56:8
“You have taken account of my wanderings;
Put my tears in Your bottle.
Are they not in Your book?”
Psalm 69:27-29
Speaking of David’s enemies and himself
“Charge them with crime upon crime;
do not let them share in your salvation.
May they be blotted out of the book of life
and not be listed with the righteous.
But as for me, afflicted and in pain—
may your salvation, God, protect me.”
Psalm 139:16
“Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.”
Daniel 12:1-3
“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wisewill shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.”
Malachi 3:16
“Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord and who esteem His name.”
Luke 10:20
“Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
Philippians 4:3
“Indeed, true companion, I ask you also to help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement also and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.”
Hebrews 12:22-24
“But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.”
Revelation 3:5
“He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.”
Revelation 20:11-15
“Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.”
Revelation 21:27
Of the New Jerusalem:
“Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
“Heavenly Father, I believe in You and I choose to place my trust on You and Your Word the Bible. I’ve had a change of heart about sin and turn away from my old way of life and to You for forgiveness. I confess that I am in desperate need of Your undeserved favor. Please wash me clean in Your blood, fill me once again to overflowing with Your Spirit, and write my name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Holy Spirit, work in my and through me to accomplish the will of the Father in my life, my family, my church, my community and the world. Thank You for Your forgiveness, for who You are and all that You do. In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray these things, Amen.”
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
—Ephesians 4:30
