Our Family Table: The Beginning of Wisdom

Daily Encouragement for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From Job 24-28

And he said to man,
“‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”

—Job 28:28

The fear of the Lord is about proper respect and perspective.  He is God and I am not.  There is something about the realization that God is all-powerful and I am a limited, finite being who only has life because He gives it that inspires healthy awe and reverence.  I should not fear men who only have the power to harm my body, but I should fear God who has the power to throw me into hell.

We serve a holy God, the most holy God and so we must serve Him with holiness.  This involves forsaking sin in order to follow His ways.  Repentance is not only necessary to be born again, it must become a lifestyle if we are to continue in the faith and grow into our salvation.  Continually turn away from sin and toward the Savior.

“Heavenly Father, You are great and greatly to be praised.  To You alone belongs all honor and glory.  I pray that You would give me healthy perspective on who I am in relation to You.  I worship You, Lord.  For there is none like You.  May I fear You in a healthy and holy way.  In the Name of Jesus I pray, amen.”

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

—Proverbs 9:10
