Our Family Table: Reverse Every Curse

Daily Encouragement for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From Genesis 10-12

“Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

—Genesis 11:4

I have always thought that the rivers of Eden were the Nile, Tigris, Euphrates, and the Ganges.  These rivers and the surrounding lands encompass the oldest civilizations of Planet Earth.  The table of nations describes descendants of Shem settling in the east.  Genesis 11 says that the builders of Babel migrated from the east.  Regardless, Elohim had commanded Noah and his family to go forth, multiply, and fill the earth.  The building of Babel was in direct defiance of God.

Prideful self-worship is the essence of the fall of man and is ingrained in the sinful nature of human beings.  The builders of Babel wanted to reach Heaven on their terms rather than obey God.  So God confused their language and they scattered abroad as He originally wanted them to.

In the New Testament, the gift of tongues is a reversal of the curse of Babel.  People speak in the language of the Spirit, and those who hear know that they declare the wonders of God. He wants us to come together in the unity of our command faith as we are remade in Christ’s image, not through coercion or selfish ambition.

“Lord God, convict us of sin.  Break our selfish pride.  May we obey You out of love.  In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.”

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!

—Acts 2:5-11
