Our Family Table: Dead to Sin, Alive in Jesus

Encouragement for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From I Peter 2

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”—I Peter 2:24-25

Before I was born again, I was spiritually dead in my sin. But when the plan of salvation was explained to me, I made the decision to believe, turn away from my sin, confess that I was a sinner in need of God’s grace, and then I surrendered my life to Him. I decided to follow Jesus.

At that moment, I came alive spiritually and the Savior came to live in my heart by His Spirit. Every day I die to the old sinful way of life so that I can live the way Jesus wants me to. I discover this new way of life by reading, studying, meditating and applying the principles I find in the Bible, God’s Holy Word. This is called walking in the newness of life.

“Lord Jesus, thank You for leaving the 99 sheep to find me and bring me back into Your fold. I love being part of Your eternal family. I pray that You would give me the strength I need to resist temptation and the courage to do what is right. Thank You for Your grace and the power of Your Spirit. You make me come alive spiritually and in You my life is filled with peace, joy and hope. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.”

I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. I Corinthians 15:31

Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.Romans 6:4
