Reading From Hebrews 10:1-18

“And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

“This is the covenant that I will make with them
    after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
    and write them on their minds,”

then he adds,

“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.”

—Hebrews 10:15-18

     When we come to the Lord asking Him to forgive us of our sins, He sees the sincerity of our hearts in contrition and repentance and He freely forgives us.  To be contrite means to be genuinely sorry for what I have done.  Repentance is to not only have a change of mind about sin, but to pivot to a different direction away from sin and toward Jesus and His ways.  God’s forgiveness is complete and made possible by His grace and mercy through the blood of Jesus and applied to one’s heart by the Holy Spirit.

     God forgives us and chooses to remember our sins against us no more.  As it says in Psalm 10:11-12, “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”  He does not hold it over our heads; He forgets our sins and empowers us to move forward in faith.

     God’s love, grace and mercy are transformative.  He loves us just as we are but He loves us too much to let us stay that way.  The Spirit within born again believers inspires, empowers, and gives guidance in resisting temptation and doing good unto others and so honoring the Lord.  And when we do make mistakes along our journey of faith, part of faithfulness is to handle those sins correctly.  We are to feel godly sorrow for our sin, turn away from and to the Lord, confess to Him and thank Him for His forgiveness.  Walk in the newness of life, free from guilt and shame and empowered by the Spirit to live in the victory provided by the blood of Jesus.

“Heavenly Father, thank You for liberating us from sin and death through the sacrifice of Your Son.  Help us to lead lives marked by compassion and holiness.  Show us how to live, Lord.  Bless us with the courage and strength we need to resist temptation and the wisdom to know what to do what we make mistakes.  Thank You for Your forgiveness and for washing our sins away into the sea of Your forgetfulness.  In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray these things.  Amen.”

My sacrifice, O God, isa broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart
    you, God, will not despise.

—Psalm 51:17

As a father has compassion on his children,
    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
for he knows how we are formed,
    he remembers that we are dust.
The life of mortals is like grass,
    they flourish like a flower of the field;
the wind blows over it and it is gone,
    and its place remembers it no more.
But from everlasting to everlasting
    the Lord’s love is with those who fear him,
    and his righteousness with their children’s children—
with those who keep his covenant
    and remember to obey his precepts.

—Psalm 103:13-18
