Our Family Table: We are the House of the Lord

Reading From Hebrews 3

“Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”

—Hebrews 3:5-6

Moses made mistakes.  He murdered an Egyptian and did not always follow Yahweh’s instructions during the Exodus.  Because he did not carefully obey, he was unable to enter the Promises Land, but instead saw it from the top of a mountain.  This passage in Hebrews reminds me of David, who was called a man after God’s own heart even though he committed murder against Uriah and adultery with Uriah’s wife Bathsheba.  Moses did not enter the Promised Land because of his disobedience and David did not build the temple because there was too much blood on his hands. God knows the intentions of our hearts and He is the perfect and righteous Judge, but He is also gracious and merciful.

He knows when we are genuinely doing our best to serve Him even though at times we do not keep the letter of the Law.  The sum total of Moses and David’s lives were faithful to the Lord.  Moses looked forward in faith to the coming of the One who freely gives grace and mercy to those who repent.  Much of what God did through Moses prophesied of the Messiah, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

The House of the Lord is the people of the Lord.  We are part of the House of the Lord if we are born again, endure to the end, and are welcomed into the New Heaven and the New Earth by God.  The Lord affirms this through the human writer of Hebrews with the phrase, “if we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”  This reminds us to endure to the end.  Part of faithfulness to Him is how we handle our mistakes.

When we make mistakes, it is not time to sink into depths of despair or give up.  We must acknowledge our wrongdoing, confess it, thank the Lord for His forgiveness and move forward toward the goal of our salvation in glory.  Faithfulness is not about perfection only in that we are being perfected and will be perfect when we meet God face to face.  We will not have “arrived” or have it all together until the Day when we join together at our family table in Heaven for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.  Until then, don’t give up!  Keep going.

“Lord Jesus, I pray for my brothers and sisters who are discouraged.  I ask that You lift up their spirits as they lift You up in worship.  Show us what it means to be faithful to You.  Lead us onward along our journey of faith until we reach the Promised Land.  Thank You for Your grace and mercy expressed in the life, death and resurrection of the Lamb who enables us to be born again, be perfected in You, and reach the glorious goal of our faith in the New Eden.  We praise and glorify Your holy Name, wonderful Jesus.  Amen.”

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

—Matthew 5:17-18

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

—Matthew 22:37-40

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

—Matthew 7:12

He said to them, ‘This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.

—Luke 24:44

Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

—Romans 10:4

But he who endures to the end shall be saved.

—Matthew 24:13
