Our Family Table: Preach the Word

Encouragement for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From II Timothy 4

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. But as for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

—II Timothy 4:1-5

A big part of why we as Christians read, study, meditate on, and put the Scriptures into practice is so that we can be ready to minister to people in need at any time.  This is why it is important to memorize encouraging verses so that we can have knowledge ready when any situation calls for it.  The Word of God is powerful because God Himself backs it up.  He is faithful to deliver every time.

The Word of God has never changed.  Our human understanding of it grows and deepens as we learn from Him, but His principles and precepts remain fixed, sealed in the heavens regardless of what happens on the Earth.  Philosophies and religions made by man will fail, but God never does.  No matter what direction polls, trends, and public opinion goes, God’s Word remains steadfast and sure and His people must be faithful to communicate it with balance and integrity.  This is how we will keep our sanity in this chaotic world we live in.

“Almighty God, thank You for the bedrock of Your Word that we can build our lives upon.  You are our solid Rock which forms our firm foundation.  You have revealed Yourself through the prophets and apostles, but most powerfully through the life, death and resurrection of Your Son Jesus Christ.  Help us to live lives worthy of the calling we have received until we see Him at His glorious appearing.  In the Name of Christ Jesus I pray these things, Amen.”

Forever, O Lord, your word
is firmly fixed in the heavens.

—Psalm 119:89
