Encouragement for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From Colossians 2

“For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ.”

—Colossians 2:1-5

As we each become more like Jesus from glory to glory, our unity in the Body of Christ increases.  Every born again believer has the Spirit of God dwelling within them and so therefore the Spirit unites us with one another and with the Father and the Son.  II Corinthians 3:17 reveals that, “The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”  In Romans 8:9 the Apostle Paul calls Him “the Spirit of Christ” and in Matthew 10:20 He is called, “the Spirit of your Father.”  We worship God who is three in one, God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit, One God in essence, purpose, and perfect harmony.  To be joined with God by His indwelling is to be sealed to Him and to the eternal family of God.

We are cautioned in Ephesians 4:30, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”  Our relationship with God is an eternal one which is built upon His unbreakable promises, one of which is that He will never leave us nor forsake us.  I Corinthians 12:12-14 tells us,

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized byone Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

We are each uniquely made as individuals with different strengths and giftings, yet we are all part of the same eternal family bound together in love with God Himself.  By this supernatural sealing power, we can travel anywhere in the world and join together with our brothers and sisters in worship. Even with language barriers preventing us from understanding all that is said, the same Holy Spirit can be felt and brings the same power that raised Christ from the dead to every follower of Him who reaches up in faith and honor.  We are with one another in spirit even if we are not together physically in the same room.

“Lord, please guide us by Your Spirit into all truth.  Thank You for sharing these deep mysteries with us.  Help us to live out Your Word in our daily lives.  In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray these things, Amen.”

One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

—Ephesians 4:5-6
