Reading From Ephesians 6
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
—Ephesians 6:1-4
There’s more to unpack here than what we see at first glance. Children obey your parents is what most people take away, but we need all of what is being said here to have a balanced approach. Children obey your parents in the Lord. Children are to obey their parents as long was what their parents are telling them is right; parents need to give instruction that is in alignment with the precepts and principles of God’s Word the Bible. Parents have no right to abuse their children and expect obedience in return. Loving and helpful guidance and discipline is needed.
Honoring fathers and mothers carries into adulthood. One day the parents who raised you will need your help. It might even come to the point where the roles seem reversed and you’re feeding them, bathing them, and changing their diapers. If we say that we are pro-life, then we need to value and respect life at every stage, not just babies in the womb. Honor your father and your mother by remaining in healthy, balanced relationship with them into adulthood and their golden years. Each scenario is different and should be handled with care, compassion, and wisdom, but I do know that families taking care of families is far more affordable than assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger. Parents need to be fair and consistent in their standards. Hold the line in a just way. Kids pick up real quick when there are inconsistencies or a lack of equality in how right and wrong is viewed and how rules are enforced. Jacob favored Joseph and that caused so many problems. Be fair and kind. Relationships between parents and children need to be built on mutual respect, so be respectable. Compassion goes a long way.
“God, the parents among us desperately need Your knowledge and wisdom as we parent our children. Help us to raise them up in the wisdom and admonition of You, O Lord. Forgive us where we fail and give us the strength we need to carry on. Bless us with renewed love and patience with one another. Protect the children who find themselves in abusive situations. Deliver them, Lord and help them to heal. Restore relationships, bring about greater honesty among people, and hold people accountable for their actions. In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.”
A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.—Proverbs 15:1
