Our Family Table: Satan is Hot

Encouragement for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From II Corinthians 11:1-15

“And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.  So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”—II Corinthians 11:14-15

The notion that Satan is an ugly creature is not biblical. The work he does in the world is grotesque, but his personage and those he manipulates in his deceitful schemes are often beautiful or handsome. Sin is attractive. That’s part of why we want to engage in it. But sin infects us with spiritual sickness that leads to death and it’s not pretty.

I once had a youth pastor who compared sin to chocolate covered vomit. Looks delicious on the outside, but when we bite into it, it is putrid. Sin will take you farther than you wanted to go, keep you there longer than you wanted to stay and make you pay far more than you have. This is why we must know the Scriptures and rightly divide the Word of Truth. As we get to know Jesus more and more, we will be able to distinguish truth from lies and see right through sin’s disguises.

“God, bless us with discernment to know the difference between right and wrong, righteousness and sin. I pray that my brothers and sisters would feast upon Your Word and hide it in their hearts that we might not sin against You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.—I John 4:1
