Our Family Table: Leave the Old Life Behind

Reading From I Corinthians 6

“The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?  Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.  Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.  And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”—I Corinthians 6:7-11

Brothers and sisters in the Lord are to treat each other with real love and mutual respect. If we are focused on treating our brothers and sisters well, then we will minimize wrong doing against them. We should ask the Lord to remove any desire within us to hurt anyone and replace that desire with more of His love.

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Paul lists a few sins here that, if they are not repented of, will prevent us from discovering our identity, community and destiny in Jesus. An unrepentant heart will keep us from inheriting eternal life and all that comes with it.

This is not a list that tells us that those who have done these things are disqualified from redemption. Notice that right after the list, Paul tells us that some of our brothers and sisters in Corinth had actually done those things, but that wasn’t who they were any longer. They had repented of those sins and were born again by the Spirit of God! By surrendering their lives to the Lord, their destination had changed from Hell to Heaven and they left those abhorrent lifestyles behind to enjoy new life in Jesus.

“God, thank You that You are greater than any sin and that Your blood can remove any wrongdoing no matter how big or small if we will but believe, confess, repent and receive Your Presence into our lives. Help us to follow You in the beauty of holiness. In Your Name I pray, Amen.”

Forget the former things;
    do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
    Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland.

Isaiah 43:18-19

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives lifehas set you free from the law of sin and death.Romans 8:1-2
