Reading From Romans 11:1-18

“So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.  And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.”—Romans 11:5-6

In every age, God has preserved a righteous remnant of His people who remain faithful to His principles. We see this all through the Old and New Testament as well as through the history of the Church. No matter the extent of wickedness and rebellion in each generation, God is more than able to protect and guide His sons and daughters who choose to continue in the faith.

In the Old Testament, a preserved remnant is seen with Noah and his family carried safely in the Ark. Part of Joseph’s purpose in Egypt was to help preserve a remnant of his kin. When Elijah thought that all had deserted Yahweh, He revealed to His prophet that 7,000 faithful ones had been preserved. When God’s people were scattered in exile, He promised to bring back a remnant to the Promised Land. These prophecies had a triple fulfillment with Nehemiah, the gathering of people into God’s eternal family through the New Covenant of Jesus, and the return from the Jewish Diaspora to Palestine in 1948.

In every century of Church history, there have been pockets of believers all over the world with great diversity of flavors of Christianity. There has never been one church with central authority over all. We see this with groups such as the Montanists, Donatists, Paulicians, Waldensians, Lollards, Moravians, and others. Much of their histories were recorded by their persecutors and so the trustworthiness of their accounts are questionable.

What we do know is that all of these churches through the ages were separate from Rome and were Christians. The point of sharing this introduction to an alternative view of Christian history, is to show that there have always been believers who did not participate in the atrocities committed by the Roman Catholic Church and that God is able to preserve a faithful remnant of His people throughout all time.

“Thank You Jesus for Your ability to protect and guide us through even the darkest times. Your promises are true and You’re faithful to fulfill Your Word for Your people.”

I will preserve a remnant of the people of Israel and of Judah to possess my land. Those I choose will inherit it, and my servants will live there.Isaiah 65:9

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18
