Reading From Romans 7
“So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.”
—Romans 7:21-25
When I was born again, the Spirit of God cleansed me spiritually with the blood of Jesus and began to live inside of me. His Spirit fused with mine, causing it to come to life! I died to my old way of life, but while I live in this temporary tent of my body, I still have areas of my life that are gradually being sanctified, that is, made holy. Mankind was made in the image of God, but that image has been corrupted by sin. To be conformed back into the image of Jesus is a process that involves continual wrestling between Spirit and flesh. Every time I say yes to the Lord and no to my sinful self, the Spirit gains ground in the fight.
It is vital to the increase of mutual respect and understanding between brothers and sisters in Christ to realize that each of us has the same battle going on inside of us. We are all in this together. But we will not be in this fight with our flesh forever. The ultimate goal of our faith is to become like Jesus and enjoy perfect unity with one another in His eternal family and uninhibited harmony with God the Father Himself.
The path to this utopia is through surrendering our wills to His authority. It means saying no to our flesh and yes to Him. It means truly putting the principles of His Word into practice in our daily lives and allowing Him to bear His good, spiritual fruit through us. One day we will be with Him face to face, we will be one with Him and all contention and struggle will cease. Perfect peace will wash over us and we will dwell in the House of the Lord forever. We will be home.
“Lord, teach us what it means to surrender to You every day. I pray that where there are areas in my life and in the lives of my brothers and sisters that we have not surrendered to You, that we would do so. Thank You for handling us with love and tender care as You break us down and reshape us into Your image. You are the Potter and we are the clay. Mold us and make us into who You have called us to be. I pray these things in the Name of Jesus Christ, by the power of the Spirit, for the glory of the Father. Amen.”
But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
—I Corinthians 6:17
