Our Family Table: Death Through Adam, Life Through Jesus

Reading From Romans 5

“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—

To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!”

—Romans 5:12-17

The problem of sin is deeper than an individual making a decision to break a command of God.  Sin is the prideful, rebellious inclination to do life our own way.  Jesus came not to bring behavioral modification, but to cleans us of sin, remove the root of sin and replace those wicked desires with pure ones that completely transforms our hearts, minds and subsequently our actions.

Sin came into the world through one man, Adam and its remedy through the one who is fully God and became fully man, Jesus.  With sin came every bad thing that is experienced in our present reality but by grace through faith in Him, we experience liberation from sin and all of its effects.  This process of gaining our freedom begins with the new birth and continues through our gradual sanctification.  We will enjoy perfect alignment with the godly principles of the Word of God and perfect harmony with God Himself in the New Heaven and the New Earth.  This grace is available to all, but only “those who receive God’s abundant provision” will reign with Him.

“Thank You Lord Jesus for providing the rescue we all needed from the clutches of sin and death.  I pray that You would help us to fully appreciate the way of salvation You have graciously provided with the shedding of Your own blood.  Make us worthy of the calling we have received.  Empower us to honor and glorify You, the Maker and Giver of life.  In Jesus’ Name I pray these things, Amen.”

He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

—I Peter 2:24
