Our Family Table: Productive Peace

Reading From Acts 9:22-43

“Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.”

—Acts 9:31

Nothing can stop the work of the Lord from moving forward.  Persecution helped spread the Gospel when believers were scattered as they fled from Jerusalem into the surrounding Roman provinces.  When Christianity is suppressed by a government, it is difficult for the churches to function in its fullest public ministry potential.  Persecution has a tendency to limit the free flow of resources to fund greater campaigns and projects.

In times of peace and freedom, as described here in this passage, the people of God are able to minister openly and make disciples of people without fear.  I would rather live in the fear of the Lord than the fear of mankind.  The former is what encourages healthy spiritual growth, the latter is what quenches the Spirit. An example of what the freedom of religion can do for the cause of Christ is found in the United States. As believers there have been allowed to meet openly and function as legally recognized entities, American churches and ministries have been able to not only support domestic evangelistic efforts, but also missionary and humanitarian work around the world.

“Lord Jesus, thank You for the freedom of religion that I have had the privilege to flourish in all my life.  I pray for those who live in nations where our faith is outlawed or suppressed in any way, shape or form.  Protect my brothers and sisters, Lord.  Bless them in supernatural ways as they serve you underground.  Let Your love and message go forth in every corner of the world, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

—John 16:33
