Daily Encouragement for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From Acts 5:1-21
“The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.”—Acts 5:12-14
Ananias and Sapphira had lied to the Holy Spirit and to the church about the nature of their offering and died as a result. This caused people to be afraid of whatever was going on in this new sect, which we know as the fulfillment of the Old Covenant. Those without spiritual understanding see the Church as a visible organization with physical buildings and other assets. This passage shows that it is more than that.
Every blood washed, Spirit in-dwelt follower of Jesus Christ is spiritually connected to every other brother and sister in the faith who has ever lived and is also connected to God Himself. Because this bond is a spiritual one, it was possible for more to be added to their number without the crowd growing in Solomon’s Colonnade. Time and distance are not able to prevent the spiritually unity of the eternal family of God.
As would be further revealed in the book of Hebrews at a later date, it is necessary for our spiritual development to have fellowship with other believers. Therefore I would suppose that the new followers probably met in private homes or the Spirit gave them the courage they needed to eventually physically join with the church meeting in the colonnade. But from the moment we are born again, we have deep spiritual fellowship with God and with one another.
“Lord Jesus, thank You for the eternal family of God that Your sacrifice made possible for me to join. As a born again son of God, I have full access to every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms and I am deeply grateful. I will never be alone and I have such a deep sense of belonging because of my adoption into Your family. I thank You and I praise Your holy Name. Amen.”
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.—Hebrews 10:23-25
