Reading From John 6:1-21
“When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.”
—John 6:16-20
Many times in our individual lives we go through dark times, even storms which rage all around us and within us. II Corinthians 7:5 describes a time in the Apostle Paul’s life, “For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within.” We desperately need someone who is able to either calm the howling storm or walk effortlessly upon the tumultuous waves. Jesus is that someone.
As we reach out to Him for His calming influence, there are times when He exercises His limitless power and brings chaos into immediate order. There are other times when He blesses us with special knowledge and wisdom needed for us to be an agent of calm organization, doing His will in our every day lives and seeing the peacemaking results. But, in accordance with His master plan, He also empowers and strengthens His sons and daughters to brave the storm, guides them through the tempest, and all the while brings rest and peace to them all the while as they sojourn. The point being, no matter what happens, Jesus is right there with us and He will bring us safely to the far shore.
“Thank You God for Your Presence in my life. You never leave me nor forsake me. I am grateful that You walk with me through every struggle, every temptation, every conflict. Forgive me for when I falter. Thank You for picking me up, dusting me off, and giving me the gumption to move forward. In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray these things. Amen.”
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
—Deuteronomy 31:6
