Our Family Table: Jesus is God

Reading From John 5:16-18

“So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.”

—John 5:16-18

Jesus is God.  The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one God in three persons.  God the Son is equal with God the Father and with God the Holy Spirit.  The persons of the Trinity are eternally co-existent and co-equal and of the same divine essence.  God is Spirit and His worshippers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.  Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through Him.  He has no beginning and no end, the Alpha and the Omega, from everlasting to everlasting the same.  Omnipresent, Omniscient, and Omnipotent is our God. There is no one else like Him.

If these concepts are confusing, there’s good reason for that.  We are limited, finite beings and our minds cannot wrap around eternity.  We cannot comprehend all of who God is, but thankfully He has made a way for us to know Him in such a way that will not only save us from ourselves, but also unite us with Him in perfect harmony.  How I look forward to that grand and glorious Day!  Come soon, Lord Jesus.

“Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that reveals so much about You and Your nature and character.  You are a good, loving and perfectly holy Father to us, Your sons and daughters.  Please continue to reveal Yourself to us that we might reflect Your glorious, radiant image in this cold and dark world.  Make us a light, Lord.  In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray these things, amen.”

Who, being in very nature God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very natureof a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
        even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

—Philippians 2:6-11
