Reading From Luke 1:21-38
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.”
—Luke 1:34-38
Jesus Christ was both the Son of Man and the Son of God and His immaculate conception made this possible. He was born of the Virgin Mary; it was the Holy Spirit who caused Him to begin and grow within her womb. The Prophet Daniel predicted that Jesus would be the Son of Man in the seventh chapter of his book and the Prophet Isaiah, also in the seventh chapter of his book, foretold that Jesus would be the Son of God. He was fully man and fully God.
The Word of God is powerful and effective. The solid truth presented in Luke chapter one that no word of God will ever fail is so vital for every follower of Jesus to be successful spiritually and make it to His Presence in eternity. Why is this firm foundation so necessary for us? Because we need to trust Him in order to experience the new birth; we must believe in Him to be saved.
There is a whole lot that is wrapped up in believing in Jesus, it’s actually believing on Him. In order to look to Him for salvation, we are implicitly turning away from the ways of the world and our old selves and so repentance is inherent in the nature of belief in the Redeemer. Jesus is the Word of God, the promises of the Most High come true. To follow Christ is to follow His Word the Bible. The Bible is the primary way that He communicates with us. We need to respond as Mary did in order for the Word to be effective in our lives. Her response was one of humble acceptance and obedience.
“Lord Jesus, thank You so much for Your promises. Your Word reveals my true identity as Your son, it shows me where I belong in His eternal family, and guides me into my destiny as Your son in the New Heaven and the New Earth. I pray that I would respond to Your Word as Mary did, even when You lead to me do something hard. I thank You that even when the task is difficult, if I yield to Your Holy Spirit, You will flow through me and it won’t be me doing the work, it’ll be You. I praise Your holy Name. I worship You, Jesus. Amen.”
In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
—Daniel 7:13-14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
—Isaiah 7:14
