Reading From Luke 1:39-56

“He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.”

–Luke 1:54-56

Hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus, Yahweh had promised Abraham that his descendants would number more than the stars in the heavens and sand on the seashore.  He also foretold that through all people would be blessed through his family, specifically his seed.  Jesus Christ was the primary fulfillment of this prophecy as through the Gospel all nations can be reconciled to Yahweh, no matter what their background, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or any other characteristic.

That Mary stayed with her cousin Elizabeth for three months must have been a precious time.  Until the twentieth century, when journeys were made to visit friends or relatives, the guests stayed far longer than they typically do in our modern times with the greatly improved efficiency of transportation and communication.

When John the Baptist leapt within Elizabeth when Jesus was nearby in Mary’s womb, it reminds me of a time when one of our pastors delivered a sermon on spiritual gifts.  At the end of the message, he began to pray in the Spirit and our son danced in my wife’s womb.  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  He is still moving in the lives of His people, filling their hearts with joy!

“Lord Jesus, You are the fulfillment of Your Law and the promises You gave through Your holy prophets long ago.  Thank You for who You are and what You do for us.  Your Presence is the best blessing we could ever hope for.  We glorify Your matchless Name!  Amen.”

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

—Nehemiah 8:10
