Reading From Matthew 27:1-26
“When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”
So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.”
–Matthew 27:3-5
Some people judge Judas harshly. Anyone who betrays a friend so horribly has it coming to them, I suppose. But nevertheless, I find his death so heartbreaking. For centuries Christians have debated whether Judas Iscariot went to Heaven or Hell. But I see in this passage what seems to be a contrite, honest, confession. I don’t believe he would have confessed and given the money back if he wasn’t truly sorry for what he had done. God is just and I trust Him to mete out perfect justice for everyone, including Judas.
“Lord Jesus, I pray that You would help me to have compassion for those who have messed up, sometimes in very big ways. Thank You that not only are perfectly holy and all-knowing, but also love and merciful. I am so grateful that You are all those things at the same time. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.”
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. –I John 1:9
