Our Family Table: 10,000 Angels

Daily Encouragement For the Family of God

Reading From Matthew 26:51-75

“With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?” —Matthew 26:51-54

Jesus had the host of Heaven at His disposable. He is the God of the angel armies. He could have called them at once to rescue Himself from the guards who arrested Him, but instead He chose death for us. No greater love the world has ever known.

As the old song says,

“They bound the hands of Jesus
In the garden where He prayed
They led Him through the streets in shame
They spat upon the Savior
So pure and free from sin
They said, “Crucify Him, He’s to blame”

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set Him free
He could have called ten thousand angels
But He died alone for you and me”

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. —John 15:13
