Our Family Table: Faith of our Foremothers

Daily Encouragement for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From II Timothy 1-4

“I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Euniceand, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” —II Timothy 1:3-5

Adam and Eve were made in the spiritual image of God. God is spirit and He transcends gender. His masculine and feminine characteristics are reflected in humanity. As males and females are all descended from those original image bearers Adam and Eve, we must respect both men and women equally.

All throughout Scripture we find examples of men and women being called, ordained, empowered and guided by God Himself. Yahweh values women regardless of the cultural context they find themselves in and He finds creative ways to do His work through them, causing them to be victorious over every challenge that sets itself up against the advancement of the Kingdom.

I have much in common with Timothy. Like him, the Lord called me to minister at a young age. But I also identify with him on a deeper level. His mother and grandmother were instrumental in his spiritual formation and mine were too. I am grateful for the strong, godly women in my life. I would not be who I am today without them.

“God, thank You for every woman who has yielded themselves to the work of Your Spirit in their lives. Their contributions to our collective faith are invaluable. I pray that you would continue to pour out Your Spirit upon us in these latter days as we near Your Second Advent. In the Name of Jesus I pray these things and I offer praise to the Father. Amen.”

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. —Acts 2:17
