Reading From John 6
“They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?”
Jesus told them, ‘This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.’” —John 6:28-29
Human beings are attracted by miraculous signs. While there is an understandable fascination with the supernatural, Jesus Himself clarifies in this passage what is vital. The greatest miracle of all is our salvation.
Without eternal life, we will spend eternity apart from God’s Presence. No amount of loaves and fishes, miraculous physical healing or calming of a storm will bring us immortality. Our destiny must be placed in the nail scarred hands of the One who makes these miracles possible. By placing our faith and trust in Him, we experience His most marvelous work: the redemption of our souls.
“Lord, we are so often distracted by the flashiness of Your mighty acts. Help us to focus on You, the Miracle Worker. May we seek the Giver rather than only the gifts. Thank You for the greatest love, acceptance and forgiveness we find in You. Amen”
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? —Mark 8:36
Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. —I Peter 1:8-9
