All-Knowing Prophet

A Deeper Teaching by Kenton Cheek

Jesus Christ is the most powerful Prophet in history, our Great High Priest, and the King of Kings.  He calls each of us as co-heirs with Him, sons and daughters of the Most High God, to function in His authority and blessing as His prophets and prophetesses, priests and priestesses, kings and queens in His Kingdom.  Let’s explore these multi-faceted roles of God the Son and part of how He means for us to be partakers of His divine nature.  First we will survey an overview of His role as Prophet.

The earthly biography of our Savior brought about the fulfillment of over 300 messianic prophecies made hundreds of years before His birth.  An incredible example of this are the predictions concerning where the Messiah would be from.  In the Old Testament, it was foretold that He would come from Egypt, Bethlehem, and Nazareth.  How is it possible for one person to be from three very different places?  Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the City of David.  He took refuge in Egypt during the infanticide of King Herod but returned after his reign of terror concluded.  Thirdly, He was raised by Mary and Joseph in Nazareth of Galilee.  Scattered throughout the gospels we find some variation of the phrase, “and this fulfilled the words of the prophet…”

Not only was He the living fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets, but He Himself is the most powerful Prophet the world has ever known.  What distinguished His leadership was that He spoke truth with authority.  Mark 1:22 records, “The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.”  His authoritative teachings were confirmed with signs and wonders.  Countless people were delivered from evil spirits and miraculously healed by His touch.

In addition to boldly proclaiming His Word, Jesus also foretold future events.  He spoke of His death and resurrection, the endowment of power from on high for His followers at Pentecost, the persecutions of the Church, His Second Coming, and many other subjects.  The deeper truth is that He is not just another human prophet, Jesus was fully God and fully man and He is the Word of God personified in flesh.  He is the promises of God come true.  His life proves His Word to be genuine and trustworthy.  Jesus Christ is the most powerful Prophet and He calls us to follow His example of speaking the truth with authority and love.
