Reading From Jeremiah 49-50
“Why do you boast of your valleys,
boast of your valleys so fruitful?
Unfaithful Daughter Ammon,
you trust in your riches and say,
‘Who will attack me?’
I will bring terror on you
from all those around you,”
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.”
–Jeremiah 49:4-5a
The message that the Lord spoke through the Prophet Jeremiah concerning the Ammonites, particularly these verses, could well be spoken to most human beings. Mankind has a tendency to trust in resources we can know with our physical senses. Money is one of the chief idols that people worship. As with any form of idolatry, we must refocus our attention, adoration and devotion away from created things and onto our Creator, the Most High God. As His children, we are to place our faith and trust for everything we need solely in God.
“Lord, thank You for reminding us through Your Word the Bible that we have no other Provider apart from You. Even as we work with our minds, words and hands to earn money, the strength and intelligence we have to do it comes from You. We give You all the praise, glory and honor, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.
–Deuteronomy 8:17-19
