Our Family Table: Raise Up Godly Leaders

A Daily Devotional for the Family of God by Kenton Cheek

Reading From Hosea 8-14

“Then they will say, “We have no king
    because we did not revere the Lord.
But even if we had a king,
    what could he do for us?”
They make many promises,
    take false oaths
    and make agreements;
therefore lawsuits spring up
    like poisonous weeds in a plowed field.”

–Hosea 10:3-4

     There is nothing new under the sun.  Politics dominate the airwaves and the internet and litigation is rampant.  Just as in the days of Hosea, people, even the Lord’s people, look to human politicians and human courts to save them, provide for them, and bring justice to the land.  When will we ever learn?  Only Yahweh has the power to bring salvation, true satisfaction, abundant provision and real justice.

     It is foolish to place our focus and trust on political leaders for the reasons laid out here in Hosea 10.  They talk for a living and much of their talk is not completely true.  And yet we place such an emphasis on what they promise to do for us even to the point of severing relationships with family and friends simple because they disagree with our particular flavor of politics.

     I believe it is important to vote for leaders who have the greatest likelihood of advocating for legislation that is right, just and fair as much as possible.  Unfortunately even when a law is passed that has some merit according to biblical values and ethics, it is usually attached to some other pork barrel spending that is not.  Yes, vote according to your conscience enlightened with the truths of His Word and the leadership of the Holy Spirit.  But know that in doing so, we are electing frail, imperfect human beings who cannot and should not take the place of God in our lives.

“Lord, I pray for the social and spiritual health of our nation and the nations of the world.  I pray for revival to well up and take hold of the hearts of every citizen.  May we have a burning desire to do Your will and Your work upon the Earth.  Sometimes it seems as though we have such a pathetic pool to choose candidates from.  I believe that this is because there are so few leaders who have been raise with a solid moral foundation built upon Your Word the Bible.  I pray that churches across this nation and the world will be raising up godly boys and girls to become righteous men and women who are intelligent, educated and well-rounded and who will stand up for truth and goodness in the legislatures and courts.  Show each and every one of us how we can invest in the spiritual well-being of the next generation in Jesus’ Name I pray, amen and amen!”

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

“Never will I leave you;
    never will I forsake you.”

So we say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?”

Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

–Hebrews 13:5-8

Hate evil, love good;
    maintain justice in the courts.
Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy
    on the remnant of Joseph.

–Amos 5:15
