Reading From II Chronicles 27, Isaiah 9-12

“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.”

–Isaiah 9:6-7

One of my favorite aspects of Isaiah is all the many prophecies concerning the coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.  The Prophet Isaiah lived hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus and yet God spoke through him to accurately predict very specific events and qualities of His life and ministry on earth.  In this passage, we learn that Jesus will be both man and God and that He will reign over a kingdom that will never end.

From history we know that Jerusalem was destroyed in the year 70 A.D., so how can David’s throne and kingdom continue from the time of Jesus into eternity?  The Kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom made up of every single human being who has ever lived who was born again by grace through faith in Jesus.

These sons and daughters of the Most High God make up the eternal family of God and in Him we live and move and have our being, even today in our modern age.  He is Emmanuel, God with us. He has fulfilled hundreds of messianic prophecies spoken and written hundreds of years before His birth, proving He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

“Lord, thank You for these prophetic messages spoken through Isaiah hundreds of years prior to Your first advent that prove that You are God and that Your Word is true.  May our lives reflect the glory of this reality in love and purity.  In the Name of Jesus I pray, Amen.”

There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

–Luke 2:36-38
