Reading From Psalms 5, 38, 41-42
“My tears have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”
These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One
with shouts of joy and praise
among the festive throng.
Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.”
–Psalm 42:3-5
Doubt and skepticism fills the world all around us. In the midst of our own struggles and heartaches, the lack of faith and the bleakness of our situation can make us sorrowful, even depressed. It is good for us to remind ourselves of the Presence of the Lord in our lives, His provision and protection. In the Presence of God there is fullness of joy![1] Worship can be peaceful and contemplative, but it is also to be at times an exciting celebration of the Most High.
When we find ourselves discouraged, depressed or grieving, it is healthy to practice self-talk as David did, but I would submit to you that the king took it a step further and practiced God-talk. I ask myself why I am feeling the way I do, and I begin to repeat to my own heart the promises of God. His Word is powerful and it never changes. Blessed be the Name of the Lord! Choosing to worship even in the middle of a mess is a way of bringing the Light of God into our situation. Ascribing in faith to Him the worship He is worthy of when we don’t feel like it confounds the enemy of our souls and lifts our spirits. Read the promises of His Word and be reminded of His goodness.
“Lord, thank You for the light of Your love. Sometimes when the troubles of my life distract me from Your Presence, remind me of the firm foundation I have in Your Scriptures. Bring light, love, peace, comfort and hope to Your children in Your eternal family. In the Name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.”
You make known to me the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
–Psalm 16:11
