A Daily Devotional by Kenton Cheek

Reading From II Samuel 1-4

“How the mighty have fallen in battle!
    Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother;
    you were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,
    more wonderful than that of women.”

–II Samuel 1:25-26

The deep friendship between David and Jonathan was a rare bond. I think that sometimes we have the impression that others are enjoying all of these close, rewarding relationships but the more we experience life the more we realize just how special real connections are. These two men had a level of trust and love that David describes as being “more wonderful than that of women.” For a man with two wives to say that is really saying something!

“God I pray that I would be a true friend to the people that You bring into my life. Help me to endeavor to deepen the friendships I do have. Amen.”

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. –Romans 12:10
