Reading From Deuteronomy 3-4
“Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? Has any other people heard the voice of God[e] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?
You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other. From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. Because he loved your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance, as it is today.
Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.’’
–Deuteronomy 4:32-40
There is no other God like our God. His miraculous power and strength are unmatched by anyone or anything in the universe, for nothing is greater than the Creator of all things. It doesn’t make sense that these thousands of desert wanderers would be able to travel all the way from Egypt and then have the strength and resources to conquer well-established nations and move into their lands. That is why it proves that God did it. The Israelites could not have accomplished all this without the hand of God.
This passage reveals some deeper truths about the very nature of God Himself. “The Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below.”[1] This phrase reminds me of Jeremiah 23:24 which says, “‘Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I do not see him?’ declares the Lord. ‘Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?’ declares the Lord.” Yahweh is everywhere at the same time. The theological term for this is “omnipresent.”
Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” He sees everything. Nothing is hidden from Him. In Psalm 139:7-10 the psalmist wrote, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.” The Holy Spirit is the personage of the Trinity who is everywhere at the same time.
“There is no other.” This phrase in Deuteronomy 4:39 speaks volumes in just four simple words. There was no one before God, there are no other gods besides Him and there never will be. Other gods are false gods with demonic influences behind them. Yes, angels and demons do exist and idols obviously exist, but there are no other real and true deities other than Elohim. His is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.[2] Isaiah 45:5a reveals, “I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.” When we interpret scripture within the harmony of the Bible, we also see that according to Hebrews 13:8 that He is “the same yesterday, today and forever.” He is eternally existent from eternity past, today, and into eternity future. He has never needed to change or evolve or progress because He is immutable and without equal. Glory to His Name!
“Thank You God for Your unchanging character and Your unfailing love. You ARE love! I am grateful that You love me and have called me according to Your good purpose. Your matchless power, strength and supremacy are what give Your people, Your eternal family, the courage that we need to move forward, knowing that You are for us and not against us. And if You are for us, then who could be against us? In You we shall have total victory in Jesus’ Name! Help us never to lose sight of that, for it is our destiny by the blood of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
