Reading From Numbers 28-30
“Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel: ‘This is what the Lord commands: When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.’”
–Numbers 30:1-2
Humans can be so unreliable. Even trustworthy ones are at times wishy washy. I am thankful that there are people in my life who I can count on. Things happen and plans have to change, but I think what this passage is referring to is when I make a promise, I need to follow through. Even when a promise is broken, we must try to make it right. Even when a promise is made and the way we originally envisioned it being fulfilled isn’t how it’s turning out, we need to find an alternative way to meet the obligation.
Also, even when new information become available and plans need to pivot, that’s fine, but my convictions and core beliefs need to be immovable as long as they are in alignment with the will and Word of God. These convictions should guide how I make and keep promises. Our Lord taught us not to make promises we cannot keep. Rather, “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”[1] It’s important to be faithful and follow through.
God teaches us how to be dependable with how trustworthy He is. We can count on God to come through for us. His Word the Bible is true, solid and forms a firm foundation to build our lives on. He always keeps His promises to His children.
“Jesus, I pray that You will help me keep my commitments. As circumstances change and plans need to be modified, strengthen my resolve to be guided by Your principles. Instill in my heart those fundamental truths from Your Word that are unshakable. Keep me from promising things that I cannot follow through on. Make me a dependable man. Forgive me for my shortcomings. Thank You for dealing with me not as my sins deserve, but according to Your unfailing love. Amen.”
Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
to utter anything before God.
God is in heaven
and you are on earth,
so let your words be few.
–Ecclesiastes 5:2
