Reading From Exodus 4-6
“Moses said to the Lord, ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.’
The Lord said to him, ‘Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.’
But Moses said, ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.’
Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, ‘What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it.’”
–Exodus 4:10-17
God can used anyone. Outward appearance and natural abilities do not limit the Almighty when He has called someone to do His work and He has called every one of us to share His love and message. Moses had a speech impediment. David was not the brawniest of his brothers. And yet Moses became one of the most influential prophets and David one of the mightiest kings. It is good to be reminded that no matter what I perceive my flaws or shortcomings to be, the God of the Universe can still use me to do great things for His glory and the good of my sphere of influence. God created you and I just the way we are, for such a time as this.[1] “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’”[2]
Ephesians 3:20-21 tells us, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” God is not bound by any human limitation and when He dwells within us, we have His mighty power at work in our lives. “If God be for us, who can be against us?”[3] I think it’s time I stop doubting myself and shift my focus from my own abilities and disabilities to operate in the power and purpose of the Holy Spirit residing within me and flowing through me. “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”[4] If I choose to depend on God and His strength and wisdom, then the issue is not how much or how little self-confidence I have, but how much confidence I place in God. Since there is no one mightier than He is, He is where my confidence belongs.
“God, I pray that You will help me shift my focus from finding reasons why I can’t do great things to functioning in the supernatural power and wisdom You willingly provide. Rather than functioning or malfunctioning in my own strength, remind me to reach out to You for guidance and energy. Make me a conduit for blessing. Amen.”
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
